What is the Canucks Autism Network?
As British Columbia’s largest non-profit organization supporting individuals with autism, the Canucks Autism Network actively supports more than 5000 members every year with the goal of helping every individual with autism feel understood, accepted, and supported in all community spaces. The Canuck Autism Network first introduced a Sensory Friendly Space with the City of Surrey in July 2018, which was a massive success with autistic adults and families with children with autism. Since then, the Canuck Autism Network and the City of Surrey have been working toward implementing Sensory Friendly Spaces at all of their signature events.
Creating Sensory Friendly Spaces
Sensory Friendly Spaces provide a quiet, calm space for individuals with autism to relax at noisy, crowded events and venues. Most Sensory Friendly Spaces tend to include a selection of different elements that are designed to support relaxation for a range of individuals across different age groups. Some of the elements included in a Sensory Friendly Space include:
- Noise cancelling headphones
- Comfortable seating
- Fidget/sensory toys
- Books
- Games
