Portable fire extinguishers are one of the most important parts of a fire protection system in a building. As the first line of defence against small fires, it is important to know where you can get a fire extinguisher inspected. Regular inspections and maintenance are crucial for ensuring that your fire extinguisher works when you need it. As leading providers of fire protection equipment, first aid supplies, and safety training, EFAS Safety understands the importance of regular inspections. That is why we provide comprehensive inspections for fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment. Our team has also compiled some crucial information on how often fire extinguishers should be inspected to ensure optimal operation and safety.

How Often Should Fire Extinguishers be Inspected?

As your first line of fire defence, your fire extinguisher should be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure optimal performance. Fire extinguishers should be inspected at the following intervals:

Monthly

Under the standards outlined by NFPA 10, the following elements must be checked every month:

  • Check the pressure tamper indicator, hose/nozzle, and HMIS label.
  • Ensure that the extinguisher is in its designated location with no obstructions.
  • Check to ensure that all operating instructions are legible and facing outward.
  • Observe safety seals and tamper indicators to ensure they are not broken or missing.
  • Weigh the fire extinguisher to gauge how full it is.
  • Look for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or leaks.
  • Ensure that the pressure gauge is in an operational range.

Annually

In addition to the monthly inspection requirements, NFPA 10 requires a thorough annual examination of the mechanical parts in your portable fire extinguisher. Annual inspection requirements include:

  • All monthly inspection requirements.
  • Perform a conductivity test of all carbon dioxide and hose assemblies.
  • Check all safety seals, tags, and pressure gauge readings.
  • Empty and recharge all pressure-loaded stream fire extinguishers.
  • Determine how long it will be until the next hydrostatic test.
  • Inspect the shell and nameplate.
  • Check the hanger and housing for the extinguisher.

Hydrostatic Testing

Under the standards outlined by NFPA 10, hydrostatic testing must be performed for most fire extinguishers every 5 years. Carbon dioxide, wet chemical, and foam dry fire extinguishers are included in this category. Under NFPA 25, hydrostatic testing must be performed every 12 years for ABC dry chemical extinguishers. Hydrostatic testing should be performed by professionals like the team at EFAS Safety.
